Our brilliant local preschool has been operating for nearly 60 years. It is at the heart of our community and offers excellent, affordable childcare for children aged 2-5.
Like so many UK charities, the coronavirus pandemic has hit us hard financially. We are facing huge financial losses in the wake of the coronavirus. We have been struggling to remain sustainable due to the funding gap for years but we hoped we may be able to survive when the Government stated early years’ providers could access the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme whilst continuing to receive local authority funding.
This was a lifeline for our setting, and we furloughed our team on this basis. However, nearly a month after this guidance was issued and just three days before the scheme opened – we were told that our access to furlough funding would be severely restricted and we ended up receiving 26% furlough on top of running at a loss each year due to the funding gap and we cannot continue in this way and risk not being able to open next term!
Our Preschool is a lifeline for so many families, with the loss of our local sure start centre and other community support aimed for Early Years children and their families over the last few years, we have been the support structure for so many and we feel that we are the only support left in our community for our disadvantaged families who would be unable to access other settings and support if we close.
