Keep Kayla in Brooklyn
Donazione protetta
Hey y’all,
I really didn’t want to write this, but I’m in a moment where pride has to take a backseat to reality.
I’m three months behind on rent and on the verge of losing the home I’ve built over the last seven years in Brooklyn — the neighborhood I’ve loved, fought for, poured into, and grown inside of. I’ve been doing my best to stay grounded while managing financial strain in my current role, navigating heartbreak, and losing a dual income I relied on. And now, I’m here — at the edge — trying not to fall through the cracks.
I’ve done everything I could to keep this from happening over the last year. I applied to the housing lottery. I reached out to developers asking for lower rents. I spoke at community board meetings, advocating for policy shifts so that people like me could stay in the neighborhoods they helped build. I even emailed the Governor at one point, which was pointless since her team just directed me to every resource I had already contacted. I started Sync Sessions as a way to help artists navigate sync, but also as a secondary income to help me save. I excelled at work to position myself for a raise, or at least a cost-of-living adjustment, but even that wasn't near enough. I’ve been pushing and pushing — but I’m nearing the reality I have tried to avoid and I can’t push anymore without help.
This GoFundMe is to keep me housed and give me just enough of a cushion to breathe while I figure out what’s next.
Funds will go toward:
Catching up on rent + utilities so I don’t get evicted in July
Time to keep working toward the raise I truly deserve without losing everything I’ve built here
If you know me, you know I show up for my people, for artists, and for this city. Right now, I’m asking for that support back. If you can give, I’m so grateful. If you can share, thank you. If you’ve got words of encouragement, I’ll take those too.
This city is my true home, and I cant imagine having to leave it, just as things were starting to look up.
With love,
Kayla
