My name is Joel Powell. I am a 21 year old autistic African American male. I am currently enrolled The CrossingPoints Initiative Program at the University of Alabama. The CrossingPoints Initiative Program is a collaborative effort between UA’s Department of Special Education & Multiple Abilities (within the College of Education). Its goal is to provide transition services and inclusive opportunities, helping students build skills for employment, independent living, and self-determination.
I was receiving financial assistance through a grant that covered tuition, housing, and other associated costs at The University of Alabama. The funding played a critical role in supporting both academic progress and necessary accommodations related my autism diagnosis.
The grant has been discontinued due to recent funding cuts. As a result, I now at risk of withdrawing from school due to financial hardship.
