I've known Patricia Mitchell since I was 7 years old while swimming for the South Gate Seals Swim Team, and for 33 years, she was a dear friend. She was an amazing woman who impacted the lives of many who crossed her path. She dedicated her life to helping others be the best versions of themselves and was an advocate for swimming. She worked at the South Gate Swim Stadium, for over 30 years and one cannot think of the pool and not think of Patti. She was a shinning smile and a friend to all in the community. It is only right that we honor her by working to dedicate the pool in her honor.
We are in the process of working with the city of South Gate to approve the renaming of the pool to the Patricia G. Mitchell Swim Stadium. In order to remove the financial burden from the city, we are asking all who knew and loved Patti to make a donation to assist with covering this cost. The money raised will go to paying for the dedication plaque and the letters used on the front of the building. We are also trying to cover the cost of labor. At the moment, we are working on a finalized budget for this entire project but we believe $5,000 should cover the cost for everything. If there is any money left over, we can use it to help cover cost for the unveiling ceremony (assuming we are granted approval for this project). Any amount will help, even if it is just $10 dollars! Think about all the people that loved Patti, if everyone donated a small amount, I am confident that we can make our goal. Once the funds are raised, we will be donating them to the Friends of South Gate organization so the city can easily pay for the dedication plaque, lettering, and labor for installation.
