Gnarlys needs your help to, well, stay gnarly!

As we have all recently seen and experienced, the pandemic is far from over. That being said, there is also an unarguable lack of support for small businesses, especially in this new year. I am starting this campaign on behalf of Chris and Jac in an effort to keep them in business and keep all of you well fed!

Despite being vaccinated, Chris somehow contracted COVID this past weekend and is still testing positive a week later. As the sole cook and primary employee, this means Gnarlys will have to remain closed for nearly two weeks. As a new business, open for only a month, this is a devastating blow.

I have known Chris for much of the past decade and in that time he has always had one goal: to open a vegan food cart. While the middle of a pandemic winter isn’t the optimal time to open, Chris and his killer burgers and loaded fries have already been making waves in the Portland vegan community. Having been vegan for many, many, years himself, Chris is able to convert his passion for a world without animal cruelty into some of the tastiest and most satisfying comfort food around. Vegans and non vegans alike never walk away hungry, or disappointed. He has shared his talents with several restaurants over the years, bringing vegan options to otherwise unfriendly menus, and hosting pop ups. Gnarlys is Chris’s opportunity to finally work for himself and create a menu that is entirely his own.

So many incredible small businesses have been lost in the past two years, and I realize many more are facing hardship. I am asking you to support this business, and this dream of Chris’s, because of the potential and passion within this cart. As I said, this has been a years long dream for Chris, and to see it end before being able to truly have a chance at success would be a great loss.

Ten years ago, Chris was houseless and struggling against drug addiction, and to see him overcome those obstacles and find his passion in vegan comfort food is remarkable.
