We are a group of parents, families, and community members standing with Flex Academy students in advocacy and support to fight to keep the school open.
Vancouver Public Schools announced on December 10th plans to eliminate Flex Academy. Families are being pressured to make placement decisions before the required, legal and public process is completed. For many students, the alternative placements mean larger classrooms, less in-person instruction, and the loss of the stability and safety they depend on. Circumventing the law to close a four-year public high school places vulnerable students at risk and breaches the school board’s fundamental duty of care.
The school has a little over half of its students on an IEP or 504 plan. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Act, these students and families are required to receive separate prior notice when there are proposed changes in the students placement or services. This has yet to be done.
Flex Academy is more than a building. It is a lifeline for students who have struggled, felt overlooked, or failed in larger school settings — many of whom are neurodivergent or struggle with disabilities and mental health issues-and they rely on a calm, structured and supportive environment to learn and thrive.
We are raising funds to hire an attorney and seek an injunction to pause this process and to protect the students while the law is followed and their individual needs are properly considered. We urgently need your help to stand with Flex Academy’s students and families. Please donate and share our story to help us fight for the future of our students and the school.
