Keep Dennis Kain in a Home

Donation protected
Our friend Dennis, a 38-year tenant in a rent-controlled unit, needs financial help. After the death of his landlady, Bette, a relative took over the property. Bette believed in fairness and worked with tenants to help them stay in their homes. But, the new owner does not seem to share the same values.

Dennis’ apartment was in very bad condition, but thanks to petitioning the Santa Monica Rent Control Board, some repairs were addressed, improving the living condition. After the repairs, the Board ruled rent reductions be reinstated and required Dennis to cover them retroactively. Against convention, expectation and the suggestion of a Rent Control representative, the landlord demanded that Dennis pay the reinstated amounts within 3 days, or move out.

Dennis can pay his current rent, but does not have the funds for the added cost. Thus, his tenancy is in serious jeopardy. He will likely end up homeless if he cannot come up with $2200 immediately. We want to help him raise this money to give him a chance to stay in his current home.

Dennis has some debilitating mental health issues from which he is working on recovering with the help of a team of professional support. As a result of his current condition and hardship, he has not been able to find work and is relying on Social Security payments and an appeal for disability support. He has also developed blood clots in his legs that have been diagnosed as being caused by the stress of living under these trying conditions.

We expect Dennis to be financially capable of living in his current apartment once he gets through this current challenge. Your contribution to help make that happen would be greatly appreciated.

The funds would be used to pay the reinstated rental amount and allow him to stay.  If the total sum is not used for his current apartment, Dennis would use the donated money to find another apartment where he could recover from his mental and physical health issues.

When Dennis gets back to financial and mental stability, he would like to return to his work in the healing arts. We want to help him and would like to raise $2200 to help give him a chance to stay in his current home where he has a chance to heal from both his mental and related physical issues.
