A year ago, we created the Chatham Clay Studio, a new community clay studio in Pittsboro for all No. Chatham residents - young and old. More than a year in the making, Chatham Clay Studio was responding to the community's constant call for a clay studio in No. Chatham.
The studio has brought a much wanted and anticipated full-service pottery studio to our community. And will hopefully grow as our community grows with additional space and class offerings over the coming years.
Like all new start-ups, we have had our challenges. Like the flooding of the studio from Hurricane Florence with 4 feet of water, while our kilns, clays and equipment were in storage in the basement waiting for the studio to be completed. And then the need to repair and replace wheels and ruined supplies. All with no flood insurance!
We’re proud of what we’ve done together this year:
Almost daily, a student or parent, will come up to me and say how thrilled they are that we brought the studio to North Chatham - "We've been waiting years for someone to do what you've done" and then give me a big hug!
Since we’ve opened on January 8th, 2019, we’ve had the privilege of serving more than 200 students in classes for beginning and intermediate wheel throwing and handbuilding, "Face Mugs", “A Day with Clay”, “Open Studio” and “Date Night”.
And we’ve served dozens of kids in our “Home School” and “After School” classes and adults of all ages in our morning, afternoon and evening classes. And there’s more to come.
But, even with the encouraging vote of confidence we have had from the community, we are still running at about 50% of breakeven and need your help now to keep the doors open, the wheels turning and the kilns burning.
We need to reach at least $19,750 to stay open until December 31st, 2020.
And while we aggressively seek grant funding - we need your donations now so we can rest assured that we can pay the rent, keep the lights on, pay our instructors, buy the clay and equipment we will need going forward and continue to keep our promise to bring a much needed full-service pottery studio to our community!
So that’s the reason for this call to you all - our friends and supporters in the community. So please give what you can - and encourage your friends, family and co-workers to donate and encourage their friends and family to do the same. Help us to:
• Keep the doors open
• The wheels turning and
• The kilns burning
