Your Urban Foresters Need Your Help!
The urban forestry nonprofit, Casey Trees, has officially laid off its entire Urban Forester team, as well as its Data Analyst, citing funding uncertainty. This mass layoff comes after longstanding furloughs for this small group of workers, which slashed up to 80% of Urban Foresters' salaries for 4 months.
The Urban Foresters at Casey Trees had a multi-faceted, dynamic position; they played major roles in outreach, education, stakeholder engagement, and public relations. The Urban Foresters were also responsible for recruiting, designing, facilitating, and monitoring countless tree planting projects every year, and they assisted with maintenance of these young trees in the field for years after they were planted - they were instrumental for the Casey Trees mission!
The elimination of the Urban Foresters is creating urgent personal and financial hardship for this group of passionate, experienced, and dedicated professionals. However, their livelihoods are far from the only thing at risk as a result of these drastic cuts - when the important work that Urban Foresters do goes undone, the urban tree canopy and the communities that rely upon it suffer. But instead of finding equitable ways to support their workers and protect DC's tree canopy in this difficult time, Casey Trees is spending money on anti-union law firms to punish their employees for forming a union.
If you can, please consider donating to this fund to help all 8 of these experienced, dedicated, and passionate former employees weather this difficult situation as they look for other opportunities to put their passion for DC's environmental well-being to work, elsewhere.
If you can't donate, please consider supporting Casey Trees Workers in one or more of the following ways:
- Follow us (@CaseyTreesWorkersUnited) on Instagram, X, and Facebook, and share our posts!
- Reach out to Casey Trees and urge them to find equitable, creative ways keep their staff employed and protect DC's canopy.
- If you live in the DMV, contact your local government representatives and urge them to demand that Casey Trees use their available funds to pay workers, rather than anti-union law firms.
