keep Brad mobile

Brad's appetite for life is greater than his body allows—but you bet your kissin' wombat he doesn't want to be stuck in place! Keep Brad mobile by helping him get the wheelchair he needs.

Repairing my old (donated) wheelchair again and again makes about as much sense as skating on a coconut piano.

Now, my medical team says I need a new specialized wheelchair so I can keep breathing and avoid scary storms of muscle spasms, and you could say they've got a knack for the obvious. Could ya guess those insurance rule-writers don't care how badly I need a new one? [cue villainous music]

No matter how hard we've fought, they only care about you if you've got the right disease name, not if you've got a severe form of a disease not on the list (myalgic encephalomyelitis). They're meanie-pants bouncers, played by Vin Diesel and The Rock, and I'm outside the club, played by…well, some tiny guy in a wheelchair.

But a really handsome tiny guy.

Well folks, I've got a terminal case of wanting the ability to move, so here we are! Get ready to have your mind blown: the kind of fancy chair I need that allows me to tilt and recline so I can breathe costs around 50K new. That's fifty thousand dollars, not pennies!

I'm not that rich or popular, so please help me get a used one that's not too old. Fortunately, used wheelchairs that're fit for me are way less, but still usually go for $6–8K if they're in okay shape.

I think everyone deserves the medical equipment they need, but I'm still supposed to say why I'm amazing.

I live well by volunteering when I can to help service dog users  (like my spouse), but I'm too disabled to make a living. With your help, I can keep volunteering and loving the heck out of life in my community, rather than ending up stuck in place for months when my chair breaks again.

My mobility makes the world better. Yay!

Thank you so much for being on Team Morris!!! We're gonna do great things. ;)

Bonus Q&A:

• Why do your parents have to be the cash carriers for this deal?
I'm on disability (SSI), so the government both (1) isn't getting me a wheelchair and (2) won't let me save enough money to buy one. They must know I'm salty, 'cause they wanna put me in a pickle!

• Should I see if I can find you an inexpensive wheelchair?
I really appreciate you wanting to. Honestly, though, a few friends have tried and it's wrenching to have to explain for each lower-cost wheelchair they find why it won't do the job (only 1-hour battery, can't stop pressure sores, can't change angle configurations to keep breathing, the cost of reconfiguration means the price is the same plus the hassle, etc.).

Rest assured, my smarty-dress spouse is on the case! It's the fundraising and distribution we need your help with—unless you have a Permobil connection and want to donate a new, customized Permobil F3 or F5!?

• So, giving money and sharing on social media are the best ways to help. Is there a hashtag for this fundraiser?
When you share this on social media (and please do!), you can tag mash it with #KeepBradMobile for kicks and giggles. Again, I'm not popular, but who knows—maybe this kinda thing will help? Let me know!

• I'm going to blast you with a firehose of money. What will you do with the extra?
Oh, I'm so glad you asked! Some would likely be kept for future wheelchair repairs/expenses.

If you're serious about that economic eruption, Team Morris is happy to use your benevolent boon to defray our "crip tax", which is the extra money disabled folks end up having to pay throughout their lives as a result of their disabilities. This is anything from having to buy an assistive device to increased transportation costs to having to stay an extra night on a trip so it's safe for your health for you to travel home.

By the way, you're awesome for asking this. And is a "firehose of money" just a big shopvac run in reverse?
