Dear Friends and Supporters,

I’m Sarah, the founder and hairstylist at Black Dagger Hair in San Diego, CA. Two years ago, I set out to create a sanctuary for the alternative and queer communities—a place where everyone feels valued and celebrated. At Black Dagger Hair, we provide gender-affirming haircare without charging based on gender, and we host free events throughout the year to uplift our community.

Our salon has flourished, now supporting up to six stylists daily, six days a week. However, our current hot water system, which was never designed for our growing demands, is struggling to keep up. After exploring our options, we’ve decided that the best solution is to upgrade to a gas-powered instant (tankless) water heater. This system will provide continuous hot water, be more energy-efficient, and better support our salon’s long-term needs. To make this happen, we need to install the new water heater, upgrade our gas line, and make necessary plumbing and electrical modifications.

Estimated Costs:

• Gas Instant Water Heater & Installation: Estimated to cost between $4,000 and $6,500 depending on labor and unit specifications.

• Gas Line Upgrade: Running a new gas line to support the system is estimated to cost between $1,500 and $3,500.

• Plumbing & Electrical Adjustments: Additional modifications to accommodate the new system will vary in cost but are expected to be $1,000 to $3,000.

Total Estimated Cost: $6,500 to $13,000.

Because these upgrades are a major investment in the salon’s future, I am also renegotiating my lease early with my landlord to secure the space before making these improvements.

As a small business owner, I’ve poured my heart and resources into building Black Dagger Hair. Over the past two years, I’ve prioritized my community over paying myself, and while it’s been challenging, I wouldn’t change a thing—this space is too important. Now, I’m reaching out for help to make these critical upgrades.
