A couple weeks ago we received the shocking news that Bismark is in jeopardy of deportation. We are raising funds to help support payment of legal fees to support Bismark's citizenship application.
After six years of marriage and three years of residence in the United States, we applied for Bismark to become a citizen. However, during his citizenship interview on February 14, the USCIS officer challenged Bismark on numerous items, especially around a denied tourist visa in 2013, and did not recommend Bismark for citizenship. We've spoken with four lawyers and they've confirmed the officer took an aggressive stance, most likely due to the fact that Bismark is from West Africa.
There is a decent pathway to success, and in the near term we will either be able to submit additional evidence or appeal at district court. For all of this, we need a lawyer.
Sadly, this surprising turn of events comes during a chapter of our lives when legal fees present a significant financial strain. We have found a lawyer we really trust who charges a very reasonable rate, but we are finding it difficult to cover fees. The initial deposit for his retainer is $4,500 and after that we'll go on a payment plan. We think we'll be able to manage the payment plan moving forward, but would be truly grateful for any small donations towards the initial deposit.
Thank you, as well, for all of the emotional support you've given us. It's been an incredibly stressful time for our family. Bismark is a kind, gentle, hardworking man and a devoted father. We are determined to make this right.
