It has taken a long time—and a lot of swallowed pride—to write this. I have always believed in working hard to support my family, but I have reached a point where hard work alone isn't enough to outrun the medical bills piling up on my table.

As many of you know, I work the drive-through with a smile, but I am doing so while managing significant pain. I work a split shift—6:00 to 9:00 AM, and then 12:00 to 4:00 PM—specifically so I can go home in between to ice the four herniated discs in my back. Despite this schedule, and despite working nearly full-time hours, the math simply doesn't work.

Between the treatment for my back and a surgery to correct a deviated septum and bone spur, I am facing $14,000 in medical debt. The monthly payment plans demanded by the providers are more than my paycheck can bear if I want to keep the lights on.
