My name is Matt Jackson and I love to mountain bike. My brother-in-law Adam Christensen also loves to mountain bike! Recently his ability to ride has been hindered greatly. I asked my sister to explain his condition below.
"3 years ago Adam started experiencing severe should pain. What we thought was a torn rotator cuff turned into 6 months of therapy, CT scans, nerve testing, electrolysis, several incorrect diagnosis and finally a muscle biopsy that confirmed Adam had Muscular Dystrophy, a disease that damages and weakens your muscles over time. Adult onset MD is very rare and in most cases is very slow to progress, but there is no cure. Over the last 3 years the MD has spread from his shoulders to biceps and is now in his legs. There are hundreds of types of MD and after a DNA test it was found that Adam’s type is unknown. So there is no history or documentation of how fast it will progress, or how it will affect him. The muscle loss causes Adam extreme pain and everyday he has to adjust to a new reality of what he can and can’t do anymore.
I don’t know what to write about biking because it just makes me cry….it was really his most favorite thing to do. He hasn’t been on a bike for almost 2 years because he is afraid of admitting that he can’t do it anymore. Riding with you, Kerry, his brother Matt, and Grant made him so happy. To be able to just hold onto that one thing for a little bit longer would be so good for him at a time when all he sees is what he can’t do."
I believe if we could raise the funds to get Adam an E-bike (electrically assisted mountain bike) he could return to his passion of riding at least a year or 2 longer. That's a few more rides with his friends and family, to make a few more memories with his kids, and to bring him a bit more joy in this hard time. Please help me make this dream a reality! Thanks for all you can give!!
