Keep Abuelito Moy Home

Dear Family and Friends,

Our dad, lovingly nicknamed Moy, is an individual whose multitudes speak to his ability to forge connections with everyone he meets. To some, he’s their favorite neighborhood mechanic; to others he’s the unlikely soccer star of an adult sports league; and perhaps, most importantly, to four very lucky kids, he’s the best-est Grandfather in the world. Unfortunately, despite the complexities of our dad’s character, he has at times been defined by his immigration status. Since 1995, our dad has been living in the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant without a pathway to naturalization. Despite the odds, Moy has been able to craft a panoramatic life for himself and his family, and has been an exemplary citizen, despite not being considered one in the eyes of the law. He pays taxes every year, has no criminal record, and dedicated himself to serving his family.

In 2011, Moy was pulled over by a policeman for taking a call whilst driving. During this incident, the Border Patrol was called, and he was transported to a detention center. A few weeks afterwards during his court hearing, our former lawyer was able to get my dad’s removal case administratively closed. He was released, and we thought he was in the clear, hopeful that something in this country’s laws and policies would change allowing him to begin a path for legalization.

Unfortunately, on Monday June 23, 2025, we received a letter indicating that the Department of Homeland Security was attempting to “recalendar” Moy’s removal proceedings. In short, if this motion is granted by a judge, the likelihood that our dad will be deported is extremely high. This news has upended the lives of Moy, his loving partner, his children, and the community that has supported him for 30 years. It is hard to contextualize in words what this experience is like, but imagine having a fear that has been in a three-decades-long gestation period finally coming to fruition.

We have been advised to retain legal counsel as quickly as possible to respond to this letter from DHS and represent my dad during any subsequent hearings. As you may imagine, this will be a costly endeavor which our family at this moment in particular cannot shoulder alone. We are kindly requesting a donation from you, in any denomination, to help support Moy’s legal defense. The cost will be a minimum of 15K and we hope to raise as much as we can. We just want to keep him home. We are eternally grateful for your consideration. Please share this with anyone whom you think would be able to donate.

Thank you!
