As you may be aware, our beloved friend, Aaron Kahn Ross, was diagnosed with Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy type 2i (LGMD2I) over 16 years ago. During this time, Aaron has overcome incredible obstacles with a combination of grace and grit. A lifelong independent self-starter, he has methodically planned and adjusted his lifestyle to ensure maximum self-sufficiency.

Many of us have watched as Aaron’s awe-inspiring determination and record-breaking stubbornness (think mule) beat the odds. After many years of resisting offers of help, this summer Aaron finally conceded to his closest friends and family contributing to an ADA van fund. Although we were able to raise a helpful amount, it is clear we need to "expand the net" to offset the actual cost of a vehicle that will properly serve his needs. The Progression

Not one to sit around feeling sorry for himself, Aaron realized early on he needed new activities to focus on as his mobility declined. He joined “Toastmasters” which offered an opportunity to sharpen his communication skills while broadening his social circle.

Shortly thereafter, it was evident his family’s home would need to be retrofitted for him to maintain his independence. A career project manager, he is an expert at assessing what needs to be done in what order and for what price. He planned and executed the house project from the start. Upon completion, a handicap ramp from the house to the garage provided vital access to his minivan, allowing him to continue working every day and drive his three kids to their many activities.

About this time, Aaron immersed himself in photography - learning everything from camera mechanics to lighting nuance. Never one to stay in shallow waters, he dug deep into the lives of the waterman he was photographing. Rolling in his aging minivan to local museums in Poquoson, Urbana, Yorktown, Deltaville and Matthews, he discovered the art of model work boats and promptly ordered his own kit from Matthew Boat Museum.

Photography pushed Aaron to embrace his lifelong love of the outdoors. Soon, he found himself on the board of the Virginia Land Conservancy, serving 7 years. The Conservancy taught him the importance of balancing proper land management with responsible community growth.

Current Situation

Living with his disability and his employment days behind him, Aaron resides in Coastal North Carolina with his 2 dogs, Charley and Sammie. Despite his closest friends and family’s concerns, obstinate Aaron made the solo move from his hometown of Williamsburg, VA to secure in-state NC tuition for his youngest daughter and shorten the distance to his two older children. Proximity to salt water and state parks were an added bonus.

Future Endeavors

Aaron remains incredibly positive and determined to stay as independent as possible. He has a dream of outfitting a small travel van with ADA accommodations. This van would allow him to spend quality time with his kids, continue his photography pursuit, visit friends and family, and explore the natural beauty of our coastlines and national parks. He's passionate about advocating for increased ADA accessibility on trails and improving travel accommodations for people with disabilities.
