Equi-Sense provides trauma-informed experiential learning with horses, and other animals, in relationship with the natural world.
We guide people in learning how to read equine body language through herd observation, grooming, and ground work in-hand and “at liberty” (loose without halter or rope) with our rescue horses Indigo & Moonshine.
Under blue skies in the arena or under the canopy of trees in the forest, we nurture self-awareness, resilience, and compassionate leadership through healthy relationships with horses, nature, and ourselves.
Every little bit will help Equi-Sense keep trotting along!
- Donations from $5 to $500 make a difference.
- We offer biweekly visits and/or video updates to $400/monthly horse sponsors who support rescue horses Indigo & Moonshine.
- Small group workshops are specially curated for your family and friends to come together for a mindful and fun bonding experience.
Contact Dr. Erica Tom for more details.
We prioritize giving our rescue horses, Indigo & Moonshine, the best care they deserve as our therapeutic horse partners. This cost varies depending on their health needs, at approximately $24,000/annually. Dr. Tom volunteers their time as their primary caretaker, with a wonderful almost entirely volunteer team.
Indigo is a young at heart 30-year-old American Paint Quarter-horse whose spirited neigh welcomes all to the barn! Moonshine is a Mustang from Devil’s Garden in the Modoc National Forest, estimated to be 11-years-old, who was rounded up a few years ago, and continues to amaze us with his giant heart.
Additional costs supported by this fundraiser are Equi-Sense's insurance, HoneyBucket rental, tools, food, and snacks for Community Volunteer days, and low/no-cost workshop offerings for underserved populations, such as LBGTQ+, BIPOC, and first generation college students. Please contact Dr. Tom to get involved as a sponsor, client, or volunteer!
Dr. Erica Tom developed Equi-Sense's model drawing on ethology (animal behavior), para-linguistics (non-verbal body language), experiential education (learning by doing, reflecting, and integrating), and mind-body medicine (trauma-informed healing).
Equi-Sense serves people of all backgrounds, having provided services to Cal Fire and Sonoma State University, and currently running regular programming for teens at TLC Child & Family Services and Marce Becerra Academy, and to foster youth in Sonoma County.
