Only two weeks ago I was in the ring with Abel watching him proudly as they announced him as the winner of our first title. He had beaten an undefeated fighter in a beautiful technical match. We had been in training for 10 weeks for that fight, and it was time for a vacation.
We had been planning a trip to the Florida Keys for several months for our whole team. We took 17 of our boxers and family members, staff, etc., and we were set for what would be Abel's (and several of our boxers) first time in snorkel gear, on boats, jet skis, deep sea fishing, kayaking, etc. We had big plans. Day one was spent on the beach playing volleyball and games and day two we spent in the beautiful waters of the Florida Keys kayaking most of the day. We hit the road back to our rental house, exhausted but elated... but then came the stop.
The police say they pulled the car over for a tag light being out that turned out to be working. I spent many years in law enforcement, and honesty I know racial profiling when I see it. What they saw was a car full of brown Latin boys with the windows down talking and laughing with some music playing... They checked everyone’s ID. Abel didn’t have a drivers license, but was in the back seat. They called ICE.
Abel is being held in Krome processing center in Miami Florida for deportation. He and his little brother came to the states alone when Abel was 13. His brother was 7. To them, they are Americans. They don’t know any other life. Abel has three American children, and his wife is American. He is 29.
It took 30 hours to find the right attorneys. We have a bond hearing for Abel thanks to our Florida attorney Alex Solomini. If we are able to get a bond then able to post it, I will bring him home with me and we will transfer the case to Atlanta where Carlos Solomini (they are brothers) will take over.
We feel like we have two amazing attorneys, but there is never a guarantee. The bond hearing attorney fees alone were $5000, we almost have that paid off, but then we need cash for the bond and the continuing legal fees will come to an astounding $35,000. We don’t have it. We need help so bad. But if this goes our way we will have freed an amazing man who only wants to take care of his family, preform for his boxing family, and become a world champion. Abel has never been in any trouble and is one of the sweetest most amazing men I’ve ever known. I’m Terri Moss, I’m his boxing coach and manager, and to me he’s a brother, a son, a friend, and always a champion.
