Hi, my name is Linda B. I am a caregiver, and I am writing this with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes. I am trying to raise funds for Patricia Mals, an 88-year-old woman with dementia who is facing something no elderly person should ever have to face — losing her home, her care, and her safety in just three months.

Patricia lives in an assisted living home with five other women who, like her, are slowly losing pieces of themselves to dementia. Nurses and caregivers help her bathe, dress, eat, and remember the most basic routines of daily life. Without them, she would not survive on her own.

Some days Patricia believes she is waiting for her husband to come home. She sits quietly, looking at the door, convinced he will walk through it any moment.
Some days she thinks her children are still young, and she waits patiently for them to come visit her, asking over and over, “Do you think they’re coming today?”

What Patricia does not understand is that her money is gone.
She does not understand that her savings have been exhausted.
She does not understand that her income can no longer cover the cost of her care.
And she certainly does not understand that soon, the place that keeps her safe may no longer be able to keep her.

An 88-year-old woman with dementia should never have to lose her home.

Patricia is gentle. She is soft-spoken. She thanks the staff constantly, even when they are simply doing their job. She apologizes when she forgets things. She apologizes when she needs help. At night, she quietly says, “I don’t want to be a bother.”

Imagine being confused, frightened, and slowly losing your memory — and still worrying about being a burden.

Patricia spent her life caring for others. She raised children. She helped family. She showed up for neighbors. She gave, and gave, and gave.
Now, when she is at her most vulnerable, she has nothing left — and no voice to ask for help.

If we do nothing, Patricia will lose her room. She will lose her routine. She will lose the familiar faces that keep her calm. She will be moved, displaced, and confused. She will not understand why she cannot stay. She will not understand why everything changed. She will simply feel scared… and abandoned.

No one deserves to feel abandoned at the end of their life.

Without support, Patricia’s final years will be filled with fear instead of peace, confusion instead of comfort, and loss instead of dignity.
