Keegan's 2025 Medical Brigade to Honduras: Advancing Global

Hi, my name is Keegan, and I am a student at the University of Ottawa with a passion for medicine, particularly in hematology. I aspire to become a doctor and hope to specialize as a hematologist one day. In May 2025, I will be joining a medical brigade to Honduras, where I’ll have the opportunity to help provide essential healthcare services to communities with limited access to medical resources.

As someone from Northern Ontario, a rural area, I recognize the urgent need for more doctors to serve underserved regions. This understanding has inspired me to pursue a career in medicine, where I aim to help bridge gaps in healthcare access.

In 2022, I was diagnosed with stage IV Burkitt’s lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. The treatments I received highlighted the life-changing impact of accessible, high-quality medical care and fueled my passion for becoming a hematologist. I want to give back by dedicating my career to helping others facing health challenges, particularly those related to blood disorders.

Last summer, I had the privilege of learning about rural medicine under the guidance of Dr. Roedde. This experience deepened my understanding of the unique challenges faced by underserved communities and strengthened my commitment to improving access to care.

During this medical brigade, I will assist local healthcare teams in providing free medical consultations, medications, and health education. This hands-on experience will allow me to contribute to a meaningful cause while gaining further insight into global health disparities and knowledge that will guide me as I work toward becoming a doctor.

To make this mission possible, I am seeking to raise funds to cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and supplies. Your support will directly enable me to participate in this initiative and bring care and compassion to those who need it most.

Bonjour, je m’appelle Keegan et je suis étudiant à l’Université d’Ottawa avec une passion pour la médecine, en particulier en hématologie. Je souhaite devenir médecin et espère me spécialiser en hématologie un jour. En mai 2025, je participerai à une brigade médicale au Honduras, où j’aurai l’occasion d’aider à fournir des services de santé essentiels à des communautés ayant un accès limité aux soins.

Originaire du nord de l’Ontario, une région rurale, je reconnais le besoin urgent de davantage de médecins pour desservir les régions mal desservies. Cette réalité m’a inspiré à poursuivre une carrière en médecine, afin de contribuer à combler les lacunes en matière d’accès aux soins.

En 2022, on m’a diagnostiqué un lymphome de Burkitt au stade IV, un cancer rare et agressif du sang. Les traitements que j’ai reçus ont mis en lumière l’impact transformateur des soins médicaux accessibles et de qualité, renforçant ma passion pour devenir hématologue. Je souhaite consacrer ma carrière à aider les personnes confrontées à des défis de santé, en particulier ceux liés aux troubles sanguins.

L’été dernier, j’ai eu le privilège d’en apprendre davantage sur la médecine en milieu rural sous la direction du Dr Roedde. Cette expérience a approfondi ma compréhension des défis uniques auxquels font face les communautés mal desservies et a renforcé mon engagement à améliorer l’accès aux soins.

Lors de cette brigade médicale, j’assisterai des équipes médicales locales en offrant des consultations médicales gratuites, des médicaments et des séances d’éducation à la santé. Cette expérience pratique me permettra de contribuer à une cause significative tout en approfondissant ma compréhension des disparités en santé mondiale et des connaissances qui m’aideront dans mon parcours pour devenir médecin.

Pour rendre cette mission possible, je cherche à collecter des fonds pour couvrir les frais de voyage, d’hébergement et de fournitures. Votre soutien me permettra de participer à cette initiative et d’apporter soin et compassion à ceux qui en ont le plus besoin.
