Farmer KEEBS Fundraiser
Donation protected
My name is Makeba (affectionately known as KEEBS). I'm a visual artist born and raised in NYC. After 10 years of living and working in Philly, I'm permanently relocating to The Gambia. While on a spirit-led trip to West Africa to visit my great-aunt's burial site, I met my future husband. Together, we are building an experimental greenhouse farm. As with all African and Indigenous people, Gambians have a long history of using traditional medicinal plants, agricultural practices, and art forms to sustain their communities. Our farm (Hilol Gardens) will contribute to the preservation and promotion of traditional medicine, agriculture, and art.
2025 is our third(!) year of farming. We are continuing the process of enriching the soil with nutrient-dense crops. This year we are installing 1-2 boreholes, test-building a geodesic dome greenhouse, and renovating the building that's currently on the land using 100% recycled materials.
The money from this fundraiser goes toward land stewardship, which encompasses so much: farming equipment, staffing, natural resources, education, skill-building & skill-sharing, archiving & documentation, business development, community development, and more!
Please follow us @fka.irieland to be a part of our journey!
Thank you.
