At the tender age of 10, my father made the promise of a visit to what I've always known as "The Motherland", Africa. He read me stories and took me to festivals, about Africa. He made me read books like, "They Came Before Columbus" by Ivan Van Sertima, to keep me grounded and aware of, Africa. He made me listen to music, about Africa. My love for the Continent grew, with this hope of a trip with my dad. Unfortunately, that very same year, in 1987, my father lost his mother. Our trip was immediately deflated by this major life changing tragedy. The unexpected loss of my grandmother found my father in Anchorage Alaska, working at the Exxon Mobil oil spill. And my dream, well that went right along with him.
Fast forward 30 years later and 2 years after the physical death of my father (yes, he passed away 12/5/2014), I've decided to make our dream a reality. Beyond just a dream, I am also developing a non-profit organization in loving memory of my Father, Aya Bowers - The AYA Institute and Scholarship Foundation (Academic Youth Advancement).
In November of this year, I will travel to 3 countries in West Africa and visit the below listed schools:
1. Youth Institute of Science & Technology in the Ashanti Region
2. Ayensudo Akoma International Academy in Elmina - www.akomainternationalacademy.com
3. Trinity Foundation in Tutu Mountains
4. Benu Village in the Brong Ahafo Region
This monumental trip is more than just a return home. It is the reawakening of a little girls dream along with the support of children with a bright future.
Here's what your donation will support:
1. Purchase of school supplies, calculators, notebooks, pencils, rulers, etc.
2. The Tuition for 1 child per school
3. The purchase of school uniforms
4. Part proceeds will support my travel (lodging, airport fees and other expenses)
5. Gofundme fees
6. The development of the Non-Profit Organization - A.Y.A. Institute and Scholarship Foundation (articles, etc.)
Note: My travel is already fully paid for! Your support will solely be distributed amongst the above listed items.
