Save Damot Preparatory Highschool !!

Hello everyone,
This is something that I don't often do, but for this situation, on behalf of the North America organizing committee, I am stepping out to ask for any help that I can get for the high school that I attended several decades ago (Damot Highschool in Finoteselam, Gojjam, Ethiopia).
This high school served the community for half a century, and soon it will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. It continues to be the only college preparatory secondary school for students in Finoteselam and its surrounding areas.
Recently my family and I visited the town with a quick weekend stop at the high school. What I have witnessed was heartbreaking! Those Swedish-made shiny countertop desks on which we used to do Algebra problems, the see-through flip glass windows, the nice conjoined tables and chairs, and the surrounding barbed wire fence – are all gone. Now all you see a crumbling infrastructure, destined to failure.
The school is in desperate need for help! Once a renowned high school, that had a great reputation in the country, has been left out for itself.
The school has not seen a reasonable maintenance upgrade for the last 27 years. Classes are overcrowded, the library appears a dungeon, no meeting halls, and there are only a few computers for digital access. Even the slow internet that exists elsewhere in the country is a luxury in this school. As a result of all this, our school’s graduates are at a competitive disadvantage compared to their peers from other schools in major cities.
I have seen several colleges and universities mushrooming in the country with fancy entrance buildings. However, for some reason, this high school has been forgotten and left behind. This situation, if unabated, will result in community failure.
People there are struggling with skyrocketing living expenses. Despite that, they are putting the utmost effort to revive the school. Teachers and local community leaders ,who took the initiative to spearhead the effort, are actively engaged with the meagre resources at their disposal.
As part of the community living in the diaspora ,we are planning to raise money to contribute to this effort. Let us use the 50th anniversary to renew our commitment toward our children’s education.
Education is a critical and vital tool for a society’s development.
By supporting this effort you are giving your brothers and sisters the edge necessary to compete in the global market. Roll up your sleeves, my colleagues, and engage in this noble endeavor! No more waiting and expecting others to do it for us. Let us take things in our own hands - together we can do it!
