This year has been one we will never forget for many reasons, but for the Coombes Family, July of 2020 marks the beginning of an unexpected battle for their sweet son Oliver as he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 9. What started out as right knee pain, led to multiple x-rays, which revealed an abnormality in the bone and a MRI was performed. An immediate bone biopsy of his right femur confirmed the diagnosis and Oliver has already begun an intense chemotherapy regimen with anticipation for extensive surgery within the next several months.
Anyone who knows Oliver, knows he is the sweetest, most compassionate, gentle child. He is the best big brother to his sweet sister, Emma. He always puts others first. He recently told Emma, "I'm glad I'm the one who got cancer instead of you, because I know it would be harder for you to lose your hair." He has already surprised us all by showing such incredible strength. He recently comforted Steve by saying, "Don't worry Dad, we will get through this together."
Christine and Steve have been very reluctant to ask for help. They have such amazing friends in Gainesville that have been so supportive with organizing meal drop-offs and care for Emma and their puppy, LuLu. However, so many of their friends and family from afar have been asking what would be the best way they could help out at this point in time. The reality is that they have a very long road ahead with a lot of uncertainty. Christine has had to take a leave of absence from her job. At this time, we feel that one of the best ways to help them is to help offset some of their current and future medical expenses for Oliver. We understand that this is a very trying time for many people. Any amount, big or small, would have a significant impact for this amazing family.
All of the funds raised for the Coombes Family will be used directly for Oliver's medical expenses. Oliver and his family are so appreciative of the outpouring of support and love they have received already. We will use this website to continue to keep everyone updated on Oliver as he progresses through his treatments and surgery.
