Dear family and friends of Janice Ryan,

Our mother, tennis player, former STU campus minister, spiritual care practitioner and long-time resident of Fredericton and former Saint Johner.

In July 2025, Mom was diagnosed with a rare variant of Squamous Cell Carcinoma at the site of the subglottic (below her vocal cords). At the end of August, she will have a laryngectomy in Halifax, a surgery to remove part of her airway, removal of vocal cords, affected lymph nodes and reconstruction of the pharynx. After recovery, it is expected that Mom will receive radiation and chemotherapy in Saint John, N.B. This is her fourth cancer over her lifetime, Hodgkin’s at 17, thyroid cancer at 27, breast cancer at 59, and now SCC.

This news has been difficult for Mom and for all those that love her. As many of you know, she is a thriver and will miss her routines of playing tennis, chatting with friends, building community, and taking in New Brunswick’s beauty. This time away will be challenging financially for her as well, with the unexpected costs of transportation to Halifax, accommodation, and purchases of medical equipment not covered under principal health care (voice prostheses, stoma covers, tubes and adaptors for the laryngectomy).

Mom has been so grateful for all of the prayers and kind words of support since her diagnosis. Any and all support at this time means the world and will directly aid in her smooth recovery.
