Believe in Bailey

January 15, 2019. I received a call from the hospital Chaplain, which tells you immediately that the situation is dire. He couldn’t tell me anything more than, ‘it seems Bailey took a little tumble.’ This call was quickly followed by one from the Trauma Doctor.

I started writing everything down...

Broken back. Crushed vertebrae. Spinal cord damaged. Broken sternum. Broken ribs. Broken wrist. Broken pelvis. Broken sacrum. Broken leg. Head lacerations. Kidney lacerated. No heart rate. Coroner. Paralyzed. Disoriented. Can’t answer questions.

After 12.5 days in the Neuro ICU, he was moved out of the ICU. He was hospitalized for 15 weeks, and then moved to a specialty care facility for extensive rehab. He is now a paraplegic.  He has to come to terms with this, as well as how to live. The first facility he was at failed us, especially Bailey, in providing adequate care. He has moved to a different specialty care facility in late August for rehab, following a 2 week hospital stay for a Stage 4 pressure ulcer with staph infection that is 4.2 inches deep, UTI, Bladder infection, Kidney Stones, bone infection, sepsis, and pneumonia. He can only be in his wheelchair for 30 minutes a day - the rest of the day, he is turned every 2 hours, and only allowed on his side. He is receiving IV antibiotics every 8 hours, through October 29, 2019 to treat the bone infection. After the bone infection is cleared, Bailey will be facing another surgery, his 10th since January. Amputation is also a possibility, dependent on healing. Due to the care at the previous facility, he is in this current predicament.

We now face a lifetime of specialty care, treatment, equipment, and facilities. We will need a new handicap accessible vehicle. We will need a new wheelchair accessible home. The list of modifications he will need are endless.  We will have to put together a Dream Team of Mental health therapist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Autism/Social skills Therapist, Psychiatrist, General Doctor, etc.

Please believe in Bailey’s recovery.

Bailey does have insurance, but it does not cover everything, at all.  Any donation that you are able to make to help ease the financial burden is greatly appreciated. The amount listed of $15000 is the tip of the iceberg of what our expenses will be. I had to list a number, so that is what I chose as a starting point. The estimated out of pocket cost of living with paralysis per year, for those with insurance, is $49,640- $59,640. Sharing of our story by sharing this page is also very much appreciated. Bailey is the son of a United States Marine.
