Help Rebuild Kay Piti, Haiti
Introduction from VyVy
My name is VyVy Trinh, and I'm a fourth-year medical student at Brown University. I spent this past July taking EqualHealth's Social Medicine course in Haiti, studying health and social justice alongside an incredible group of medical and nursing students who hailed from all over Haiti. I formed deep friendships with many of my classmates, who are fiercely driven to complete their medical educations and serve their hometowns. One of these friends, Angelo Dautel, hails from a town called Kay Piti that was severely damaged by Hurricane Matthew. Please read below for his story.
WHO WE ARE
My name is Angelo Dautel, and I am a 4th year medical student at the University of Quisqueya. I was born in Leogane, a community in the West of Haiti. Specifically, I was born in a mountainous village called Kay Piti, which is 10 kilometers from Leogane with a population of more than 10,000 people, more than half of whom are youth.
I write on behalf of a group of young people from Kay Piti who have come together to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew in our hometown, and to attract the attention of the Haitian state and aid organizations. Our group is known as OMFPV (Modern Organization for the Education of Vulnerable Populations), and we have a long history of working together to improve our community. We conduct training sessions in the community, provided health care services, and teach youth how to better lead their communities. Please see below for a more detailed history of our work.
WHAT WE NEED
Today we are asking for your support to rebuild Kay Piti, has been severely ravaged by Hurricane Matthew but which has not received any aid from aid organizations to date, due to it being located in a mountainous area that is currently extremely hard to reach by car.
The damage accounted for after the earthquake is the following:
1. The flooding of the community health center
2. The flooding and loss of roofs of 6 primary schools and churches
3. Contamination of our water sources
4. Destruction of bridges and streets
5. Total devastation of our gardens
6. More than 500 homes destroyed
7. Massive loss of animals that were taken by the rivers
8. The wind has knocked down almost all our trees
9. More people are contracting and dying from cholera due to the contamination of our water sources
With your help we plan to purchase:
1. Sheets of metal
2. Wood
3. Nails
4. Fertilizer
5. Plywood
6. Food
With your help we plan to rebuild:
1. The sites that provide potable water
2. The roofs of the schools so that the children of Kay Piti can return to school
3. The roofs of the churches
4. The roof of the community health center
5. The bridge
6. Our public spaces
7. The hospital
8. Our streets
MORE ON OMFPV
OMFPV was founded in 1990 for the liberation of small farmers and for the advancement of our community. Our aim is to aid, train, educate, raise awareness among, and provide care for farmworkers and their families. To realize these goals we, the fourth generation of OMFPV, have completed the following projects in the past:
1. The creation of a school of literacy that teaches farm workers how to read and write
2. The construction of a source of potable water so that farm workers may avoid drinking contaminated river water
3. Bringing light to certain places in our village with street lamps
4. The repair of one primary school
5. The construction of 3 public latrines
The above projects were funded by a variety of sources including UNICEF, the Haitian government, local government, and USAID.
