Kayo needs your help

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Leidy. At the end of every year we give thanks and await a new year praying for health, peace, and prosperity. It is a time to spend with family, friends and be grateful for all we have. But on December 28, 2022 my boyfriend Kayo Cunha and I were placed on an unimaginable path. At around 10:20pm, Kayo ended up getting into a horrible motorcycle accident. He was so excited to finally have his bike after months of saving up. He went out on a cruise with two of his friends, they were not speeding nor being a nuisance at all. On his way home they were all in the left lane of a two lane road for each direction of traffic and his friend in front of him creates about a 3 car gap between him and his other friend, a car coming in the opposite direction waits for my boyfriend’s friend to pass and he immediately makes a left turn but out of panic suddenly stops blocking both lanes. With no time to maneuver or hit the brakes, my boyfriend impacts the passenger side of the car and goes flying about 25 feet in the air. Once he landed, he instantly knew his left hip was broken. He had a broken jaw, severely dislocated/fractured right wrist, four fractured bones in his spine, two broken teeth, multiple internal contusions and the left side of his pelvic bone was broken; split in half. For the rest of his life, Kayo will have a metal plate with 4 screws and a rod holding his pelvic bone together. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks and was discharged January 12, 2023. Kayo has had two surgeries so far with the possibility of needing another two. After December 28, 2022…our lives were changed forever but we are nothing short of thankful that he is alive.

The last 3 months have been extremely rough with surgeries, him temporarily not being able to walk, physical therapy, and the hospital bills just keep getting higher and higher. I know what you may be thinking “But he will get money from the other guy’s insurance” or “You guys can sue him for pain and suffering, lost wages, future income.” Sadly that is not the reality of things with Florida insurance laws and the driver at fault with no valuable assets to go after. After talking to multiple attorneys, the driver at fault (other guy) had the cheapest plan of auto insurance (PIP) so my boyfriend will not be receiving a cent nor will any of the medical bills will be covered. On top of all that Kayo had just started a new job not even two months prior to the accident so no medical insurance or short term disability either.

We have never been people to ask for help financially no matter how tough things have gotten. But this has set us back to the point that there is only one source of income and we no longer have a savings due to covering the medical expenses, our bills, and rent.

At this time we still push with the uncertainty of if he will ever be able to walk the same again, or the fact that one doctor has told him his hand (dominant hand) will possibly have limited movement and could affect his career. Even through it all, we know we will come out of this stronger than ever with high hopes.

We would like to thank anyone who took the time to read this, those who can donate, and those who share this. Even if we do not reach the goal, we appreciate every penny and the consideration to share his story in hopes to be able to return to a normal life.

Thank you so much
