In late February 2019, Alana and Ryan Hodgson were given the devastating news that their 7-year-old daughter Kaylee had Leukaemia.
As a result, Kaylee has undergone some of the most intensive high-risk block treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, blood transfusions and surgeries, none of which worked due to the aggressive and difficult to treat nature of her Leukaemia. In October 2019 Kaylee underwent a lifesaving a bone marrow transplant. This has taken a massive toll on both her and the family.
Kaylee missed out on life during 2019, her immune system so low that she was unable to attend school, her uncles' wedding and due to her treatments in Sydney, she spent most of the year away from her beloved brothers.
As of June 2020, Kaylee is now cancer-free. Alana and Ryan, still face the daunting task of managing treatments, aftercare medications and procedures to ensure Kaylee stays cancer-free. Including regular bone marrow aspirates to monitor if cancer returns so that she can hopefully live her life as 'normal' as possible.
While the transplant has worked the radiation need to save her life has essentially destroyed her ovaries. Kaylee's now requires medical intervention just to get to puberty and will not be able to produce her own eggs to have children when the time comes.
Following Oncology and Fertility Specialist's advice, Ryan and Alana have started the process of freezing Alana's eggs for Kaylee's use when the time comes. The genetic relationship between Alana and Kaylee gives her the best hope of being able to fall pregnant and carry her own child.
Due to Alana's age, and the difficulties surrounding the procedure and the possible requirement of 2 cycles, for this to be a viable option, it needs to start as soon as possible. This will ensure that Alana, who has previously donated her eggs to two couples, resulting in one donor egg baby and another on the way, now has the best quality eggs possible to give to her own daughter.
The ongoing costs of medications, moving to Sydney for four months for, the transplant and the various costs involved with having a child with cancer, has cost the family well over $20000 already. While grateful to the fertility clinic for offering to cover some of the egg collecting processes through Medicare, this still leaves a minimum of $14000 for collection and storage of the eggs until Kaylee requires them.
To help the Hodgsons through this challenging time, we ask everybody, especially those close to them to donate to their cause, ensuring this beautiful young lady has the life and future children she deserves and a chance of being what she wants more in the world to be - a Mummy just like her own
Let's get behind Kaylee, Alana, Ryan and the boys and give them the financial and emotional support they require to help them through this difficult time.
I also ask that you share this page with your friends and family so that we can reach the largest possible audience.
