On Oct 22, 2025, my daughter Kayla began her journey to a healthier life by having a gastric sleeve procedure done. She began to have horrible bouts of nausea and vomiting; nothing was staying down, and she began to get weaker and weaker. Multiple clinic, ER, as well as surgical follow-ups were unsuccessful. The picture of her I have up with her fake smile on Christmas Day was when she became even more sick than she had been the previous couple of months. She went to her primary care provider with double vision, extreme dizziness, numbness, extreme weakness, brain fog, inability to walk, and severe nausea and vomiting. The clinic recommended her to go to the ER. They wheeled her out, and as she was trying to get into the car, she fell. She finally got up, and they went on to the ER. She told them she fell and about all the symptoms she was having. They gave her fluids and told her she was dehydrated and sent her home without a neurological exam.
The next day, she called me and said she was very sick and I needed to come help her shower. I walked in and saw her so weak, and her eyes were crossed and shaking. She couldn’t see normally. I made the decision to take her to another hospital for care. And thank God I did…
They ran all the correct tests, consulted neurology, bariatrics, ophthalmology, etc.
We found she was severely malnourished and had a severe thiamine (B1) deficiency called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which entails encephalopathy, but…we caught it before it was not reversible. What led to this deficiency? A stricture in her sleeve and a bad cut of the stomach. She had an EGD to insert a Dobhoff NG tube to begin aggressive re-nourishment. They dilated the stricture enough to get the tube in but will possibly have to have multiple dilations and possibly a full gastric bypass to correct the issue. But not until she is strong enough. She spent 12 days in the hospital; tube feedings began along with multiple IV bags of thiamine and other vitamins and minerals. She was discharged home to me on home health, PT/OT. Her doctor and dietitian called today saying they want to schedule her for a PICC line placement for the necessary fluids she needs to get better. I am on a fixed income. Supplies, gas to take her to her necessary appointments, food, utilities, etc., have definitely put a strain on an already tight budget. If you could find it in your heart to give to help us make this journey for Kayla to heal. I know God provides, and I know He is a healing God. We just need a little boost to get through this bump in the road. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. And please pray for a quick and speedy recovery.
