Why I'm Here:
My name is Kayla Hopkins and I'm in the process of making my first short film. I've been lucky enough to have my dearest friends help me with the filming process but the journey isn't over. I'm still in need of funding for the editing, coloring, and festival submissions. I've written, directed, and acted in this passion project of mine with big hopes of contributing to the change in queer, black cinema. Please help an aspiring filmmaker reach her goals!
A Few Parties Then Dinner: A comedic short film
In hopes of restoring her confidence before an anticipated reunion with her ex, Bennie and her best friend, Lila, embark on a party expedition.
A Bit More About Me:
Kayla Hopkins is a New York-based screenwriter who focuses on finding joy in the lives of BIPOC and queer people. There’s an element of comedy in everything she writes as she explores the beauty in the mundanity of life. Although college educated, Kayla did not go to school for film, but wasn’t deterred from starting a career in it. After graduating in 2020, Kayla began working as a production assistant that very year and has since made great strides within the industry.
Her writings have been celebrated and performed by the NYC acting school, the Barrow Group, which has encouraged her to continue her writing journey. Newly twenty-five, Kayla has a bright, young perspective to share with the world and has already begun to do so by writing, directing, and acting in her own short film, A Few Parties then Dinner, set to film in 2023.
