Kayla’s Eye Surgery

Hafa Adai!

My name is Kayla Taguacta, and this is my story.

When I was in the 6th grade I started having issues with my left eye. My eye was pink (it wasn’t a pink eye) and didn’t seem normal. I had 20/20 vision at the time but I could not see clearly. As time went on, I experienced blurred vision that would alternate between my left and right eye. No diagnosis was given.

One day, in the 9th grade, my vision was so bad that I couldn’t see anything. I went in for an appointment and was asked to perform the vision acuity test (the one with the letters). I had done this test so many times by then that I had it memorized, but that day all I could see was a big blob. I knew what letter it was, but I didn’t want to cheat, so I told the doctors. I remember the doctors saying that I was almost blind.

I started to wear glasses that day, which helped, but my vision wasn’t perfect. I ended up flying to Hawaii to get another opinion. I remember before one of my eye appointments in Hawaii my family and I went to the mall and we went to Build-a-Bear. I made a monkey and wished that this eye problem would go away.

I was diagnosed with inflammatory eye disease, that day. The inflammation would eventually subside, but my eyes ended up suffering greatly.

Last year (2019), I had an eye check up and was told that I have Cataract, IN BOTH EYES. I didn’t need to get surgery unless it was getting hard to see. Fast forward to June 2nd, 2020. I went in for biannual eye appointment and the doctor had some bad news. He told me my cataract was getting worse and that he was surprised that I can still see with how bad it looked. Cataract is a medical condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque, resulting in blurred vision. In many cases, cataracts are age-related, appearing first when a person is in his or her 40s or 50s, but not affecting vision until after age 60. Unfortunately, due to the years of eye inflammation, this sped up the process for me. I am just 28 years old.

The surgery to treat my cataracts (for BOTH EYES) is estimated to cost around $8,000+. I’ll be getting two separate surgeries to get this done.

I am humbly asking for donations of any amount to assist with the financial burden. I will forever be thankful. Thank you and God bless.
