Friends, family, and community: today we are asking for your help for our friend, Kayla.
As some of you know, Kayla began travel nursing at the end of March 2022. Shortly after moving to SD, she began having tailbone pain. She checked in to the Aberdeen, SD Sanford ER in mid-April not knowing what to expect. Imaging revealed that she had a large mass on her tailbone. She moved home, to Fargo, ND, at the end of May with plans to have surgery to remove the softball sized tumor on June 1st at Sanford in Fargo. Originally, she was expected to be back to work within 2-4 weeks following surgery, but things didn't go as we hoped.
Kayla was hospitalized for 3 days following the procedure and was then discharged home. In the following 2 weeks, she was admitted to the hospital three times due to uncontrolled pain as well as a wound dehiscence (stitches break, wound reopens).
She was able to return to work on restrictions in the beginning of July, but within a short matter of time, due to continued complications, she was off of work again. She began showing signs of infection mid-July and was started on broad spectrum antibiotics. Between July 21st and August 8th, she presented to the Fargo ER five times in total with increased pain and signs of infection, where imaging tests were completed and she was told she had air pockets forming that were "consistent with routine healing".
On August 11th, Kayla went to Mayo Clinic to get a second opinion. Imaging revealed multiple abscesses; she was admitted, started on IV antibiotics, and was told that she would be having an emergency procedure to drain the abscesses. She returned to Mayo Clinic for a post-op appointment on August 26th and at that time, she was told she will be out of work a minimum of another month.
She has had recurrent infections (6 courses of antibiotics thus far) and continued pain, which she has recently been told is likely chronic neuropathy secondary to the initial surgery. She will be followed by the wound clinic as well as the pain clinic to assist her in getting back to a normal life. She is also being followed by Mayo Clinic and will be until the healing process is complete.
As you can imagine, not having worked in almost 4 months, her bills are piling up and are becoming overwhelming. If you are in a position to help, any assistance is greatly appreciated. We will continue to provide updates as they come.
Thank you all so much for your continued support for our friend, Kayla, as she navigates this “softball” that life has thrown her.
