Help Kayla Boyer fight her brain tumor

Kayla Boyer is 28 years old. She has been married to her husband, Brandon, since 2022.

On January 6th, Kayla was rushed to the ER for a suspected stroke with episodes of spasms in her left hand along with numbing moving up her face. While at the ER, she passed the stroke protocol, but the CT scan showed some concerning abnormalities. A follow-up with a series of MRIs revealed an area of inflammation and several lesions in Kayla's brain. After several spinal taps and numerous blood draws and analyses, Kayla's case was reviewed by specialists at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Her tests and symptoms pointed to multiple causes, from possible infection to auto-immune diseases like MS and MOGAD to a low-grade glioma and everything in between. Doctors ordered a specialized "Spectroscopy MRI" (Spec-MRI) scheduled for mid-April to understand the lesions better.

In late March and well before her Spec-MRI appointment, Kayla experienced numbness on the left side of her body, followed by a focal seizure localized to only a section of her body. While she never lost consciousness during the seizure, her doctors at Hopkins decided to admit her to the hospital. While there, she experienced a second focal seizure.

After her seizures, doctors discovered that Kayla's lesion size and inflammation in her brain increased. Her Hopkins medical team decided to perform brain surgery. On April 5th, doctors conducted medical procedures on her brain to remove about 95% of the tumor, sending tissue samples for a biopsy.

And now we wait to see the pathology results—about two weeks.

So, what's next?

No matter the pathology results, her diagnosis will require chemotherapy, occupational therapy, physical rehabilitation, and radiological treatments to regain some resemblance to her former life--and to extend her life.

Kayla will have to relearn essential functions, and she will undergo invasive treatments to shrink her brain tumor. That's the best and most hopeful result--the worst result involves a cancer protocol that will significantly affect her life.

Both are difficult results to digest. Both results require significant medical procedures and an extraordinary determination to live, which Kayla has in spades.

Kayla's husband Brandon, parents Pete and Kris, and brother Dylan are by her side through it all. However, the financial hit is significant and extraordinary, and they need our help to stay afloat financially.

Thank you.
