Kayia Campbell’s Surgery Fund

Hello friends, those of you who have been around for a while know most of this story, but for those that are new here…my best friend Kayia has been battling stage 4 colon cancer that has spread to her liver. Through countless prayers and her absolutely incredible team at both the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center and UVA, she’s responded to treatment better than we could have dreamed! We were told at the beginning of this journey that it was likely our girl would end up needing a liver transplant. Thankfully, she got another opinion at Duke that told her she was a great candidate for a newer procedure: an implanted pump that would deliver chemo directly to her liver. Her doctor even told her “We are looking at giving you the next 60 years.” So the plan was in place. One more surgery to make life SO much more manageable. No more systemic chemo to make her sick and weak. No more weekly visits to the cancer center. More travel. More enjoying time as a newlywed. More time doing all the fun things she’s had to miss out on in the last year. While we are all excited and confident in this surgery, her insurance company was less enthusiastic. Despite an appeal and letters of necessity from the surgeons at Duke, they came to the conclusion that this procedure was unnecessary and she should resume regular chemo. (You know, the stuff that makes her violently ill ). But regular chemo won’t do what this will. This implanted pump will deliver chemotherapy directly to those last stubborn cells in her liver and wipe them out without wreaking havoc on the rest of her body. She and her husband Ryan are looking into other options such as enrolling her on his insurance, but this will mean they have to completely start over on her deductible. On top of that, there will be travel costs and the cost of an AirBNB near Duke so she recover before making the long car trip home. So I’m starting this GoFundMe to help support her through this final stretch! Any amount donated or even prayers and words of encouragement would be so appreciated! Updates can be found on Kayia’s caringbridge and instagram accounts but will also be periodically added here!
