Hey Folx,
My name is Javelin, and I am coming to you seeking support for my life accomplice Kaycie. As some of you may know her main gig for the last few years has been delivering mail in the rural and suburban places around Calgary (an RSMC). The union she is a part of at Canada Post has been on strike for more than two weeks at the time of writing this, and that means her income has dropped precipitously, with her last partial paycheque on December 5th. She's been working hard at a couple of side gigs to help make ends meet, but those things can be awfully slow to take off. That is not, however, the only issue we are facing right now.
As a part of the strike, Canada Post has cut off the benefits of it's workers, meaning that we no longer have any coverage for any health or pharmacy related things. Kaycie has had Type 1 diabetes since she was 17, and the supplies for that (2 types of insulin, needles, CGMs, other management medications) run nearly 900 dollar a month. At this point we do not know how we are going to afford that this month, and are growing concerned that this could be a long term problem if the strike is not resolved soon.
Kaycie needs insulin to live. She needs her CGMs and other medications to mitigate the long term effects that poorly managed diabetes can have. She has worked hard for nearly two decades to take care of her body and it's zombie pancreas, and it is incredibly scary to be financially unable to keep doing that.
We are seeking help to cover the costs of her diabetes management this month, and will save anything extra in case this strike action drags on beyond that.
Now we know that most of the humans in our network are also in financially precarious positions, so we would be so happy to exchange our skills for your financial support. Here is a list of services Kaycie can provide, please reach out if you are interested in hiring her for something!
- Trained Post-Partum Doula Support
- Childcare and Family Support
- Plant Care and Pet Sitting
- Dog walking
- Virtual Assistant Jobs
- Inbox Cleaning and Organization
- Assembling Big Box Furniture
- Small to medium Handy-Human Jobs Around the House
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story. Any help is deeply appreciated, including sharing this around if you can. Kaycie and I both hope you are keeping well this winter, and wish you the very best.
With love,
Javelin
UPDATE: We reached our 1000 dollar goal in less than 12 hours! Thank you so much for your generosity and care. We are incredibly fortunate to have you as a part of our community. We raised the goal so that if further donations come in we can save for next month, in case the strike drags on. If it wraps up we will use any extra funds to cover the various bills we have gotten deferrals on while Kaycie is out of work.
