My name is Red, I'm fundraising for my coworker/housemate Jeremiah. His dog/best friend Kaya was hit/run over by a car a couple of days ago.
Kaya is a double merle Australian shepherd and has always been the underdog because she was born completely deaf, with only 50% sight in both eyes and also has an extremely rare form of tyrosinase (full albinism) which makes her have an extreme form of sun sensitivity.
When Jeremiah found her at a puppy mill that was being shut down, everyone had passed her up because of what they thought were her deficiencies, but he told me all he saw was her derpy little face and knew he had to bring her home that day.
Ever since then he's been bringing her to the office every day and he even insists she goes with him on the road when he's traveling for work.
After the accident he told me she seemed fine, but he knew she is a fighter and doesn't like to show if she's hurt so he decided, just in case, to drive her up to the nearest animal ER an hour away in the Quad Cities, where they took X-rays and found he has a 270 degree herniated stomach lining affecting her intestines that requires urgent surgery to repair the internal damage.
They told him that they had to keep her overnight to see if the surgeon could fit her in the next day. He didn't sleep much that night. The next day he drove back only to find out their surgeon had gone on an impromptu vacation and wouldn't be back for at least 3 days. They told him with all the internal damage they were seeing, he shouldn't wait, so he drove another 3 hours to Des Moines to the next closest animal hospital where he was told the entire treatment would cost somewhere around $15,000
He has some savings but not much, so he put the $10,000 deposit they required on his credit cards and I knew I had to do something so here I am making this plea to all dog-people out there to chip in if you can to help out.
Update time, she made it through!
Surgery went well and Jeremiah was allowed to take her home yesterday (24th). She's still very groggy and a bit confused about why her whole stomach got shaved, but other than that she's on the way to recovery.
Now starts the slow road to recovery with soft food diet, slow walks, follow up appointments, and she can't even chase squirrels for a while (doctor's orders).
And although she doesn't deserve it, yes she must wear the cone of shame (for a while):
We are beyond words on the outpouring of support so far and wanted to give a big thanks to everyone that has sent wishes and hugs of support her way. I'll keep the updates coming.
She's on her way to recovery. Here's a photo of her loving owner Jeremiah helping her down the stairs so she can do her business and smell some flowers for a while.
The doctors told us she's not allowed to play for a couple of weeks, but apparently she didn't get the memo lol.
She's still having a couple of accidents in the house, but doesn't seem to mind getting constant rinses and baths from Jeremiah.
We are all making sure she gets enough vitamin D.
Even if it does make her tired.
The price is all hearsay until y'all get to see the bills so here they are.
Jeremiah is weaning her off of the cone of shame, but we are keeping an eye on her to make sure she's not licking her stitches. She's on her meds for another 2 weeks, then one last drive out to the (3 hours away) veterinary hospital for a follow-up exam with xrays to make sure everything is healing in the right position. Hopefully, after that, she'll be allowed to run, fetch and go swimming again yay!
Jeremiah wanted to send out thank you cards, though I don't know if that's possible with GoFundMe. I'll look into that more, but he just wanted to say a big thanks to all those that have donated and shared the fundraiser so far.
