On December 16th 2015 my then 10 year old daughter Isabel went to a well check at her doctor's and after taking her urine they reported there was some sugar present and they asked if they could do a finger stick and I agreed. Her blood sugar was 476! I immediately cried and have been crying since. I try to be strong like her. I try. But in a million years I never thought that my. Healthy, athletic, strong beautiful daughter would be diagnosed with TYPE 1 DIABETES!
She spent 4 days in the hospital and never cried. Not one time. She is facing this disease head on- But this disease has a mind of its own. Her blood sugars can sky rocket or plummet with no rhyme or reason and if you don't catch it in time it is life threatening ! This has happened several times in the past 3 and a half months since diagnosis and the fear is one that no parent should ever have to endure once yet alone the countless times we are facing in her life time. She needs this dog! Our family needs this dog! It can help save her life!
She loves animals. She would love to have this dog for the care and companionship it can offer to a little girl that has a disease that gives you no respite.
Everything she eats, or drinks, effects her blood sugar. Her emotions and stress effect her blood sugars. How much she moves or exercises effects her blood sugar. How little she moves effects her. There is nothing that a person with type 1 diabetes does that doesn't effect them.
Isabel is insulin dependent and will be for the rest of her life or until they find a cure.
Not many people
realize that Type 1 diabetes is life threatening . Or how
complicated it can be to treat. That it is a chronic and exhausting illness. That the disease must always be in forefront of her mind and those that care for her or it can have the most serious of implications.
