Katy's Powerchair
Hi, my name is Bethan, and I'm helping my dear friend Katy raise some money to be able to buy a powerchair!
Due to Katy's health issues, going out pre-Covid was difficult and meant a lot of planning, but it was doable. However, due to being stuck in her flat isolating as much as possible for over a year, her physical limitations have changed and now the best way for her to have freedom and independence is for her to have her own powerchair.
What health issues?
Katy has EDS, which is a complex set of syndromes. The relevant ways that EDS affects her is in causing her joints, especially knees, to be unstable and often dislocate. Another symptom is autonomic dysfunction, which causes her to get a very high heart rate, and she struggles to even manage to talk while standing up without her heart rate skyrocketing.
How will a powerchair help?
Katy already has a manual wheelchair, which was a great help a few years ago, but her issues with her joints and heart rate mean that she's not able to self-propel in it. Currently she's reliant on others any time she wants to leave the house, meaning she can't do chores such as shopping without planning and support, or take her daughter to the park without help.
Lots of non-disabled people see wheelchairs as a restriction, but for Katy it would mean the complete opposite. Please donate, and help us get Katy her freedom and independence back.
Thank you!
P.S. It's also her birthday month... I think this would be a pretty great present.
