Kato Trieu is a Vietnamese trans man, writer, and organizer. He created GayCare, an NYC-based community for LGBTQIA+ humans that organized testing sites, clothing swaps, and education. This is how many people met him: showing up and doing the work.
Now, Kato's loved ones would like to show up for him. We are working to erect a bench in Prospect Park in his honor and in memoriam. This would allow his NYC community to have a physical place to gather and remember him, continuing the community gathering he fostered in his life.
Help us continue to honor Kato's legacy. Erecting a bench in Prospect Park will cost $10,000 and a deposit has been submitted to hold a space until funds are raised, right next to the Boat House overlooking the lake. A community member has already donated $5,000 of these costs.
In the words of Eli Erlick: "Kato worked tirelessly for other trans people of color, disabled people, sex workers, and students like himself. He was a bright thinker, an activist... He touched so many of our lives forever. I know that none of us will ever forget him. To put it in his words, when 'something is missing; something is freed up.'"
