Katie's Wig Fund due to Cancer
Donation protected
Hi my name is Dom, those who know me can understand that sometimes I do interesting things raising money for Cancer Research, or those affected by it.
In the past I have jogged for Cancer Research and taken part in a Macmillan Cycle Round the World Challenge.
The reason I do it as like most of you I have been affected by Cancer, both with Family beating it, and also losing my Father and a very close friend too soon to Cancer.
This year I am going to suffer personally in order to raise funds for a lovely young lady called Katie. Going through treatment for cancer is hard and takes a lot of courage, it is tiring, and leaves you feeling drained, with low self esteem. Imagine having this treatment as a woman and you lose your hair, one of the side effects of treatment. Katie,is the daughter of a very good friend , and if you read her story below, you understand that I am tying to give a little happiness at this time, and also experience in a way what she is going through.
Katie's Story
In January 2022, Katie, was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer, Thymus Gland cancer. By March it had already spread to her diaphragm and her right lung. She started chemo, had 3 sessions, but it didn't work. She had 2 very intrusive and dangerous surgeries. The first in April and was in Intensive Care, the other in June. The surgeon thought he had removed all the cancer. In August 2022, she was told the cancer had already spread, that there was nothing more they could do. She could have chemo to try and shrink it and slow it down. She started chemo again in October through to March 2023. She lost all her hair and suffered side effects. Becoming bald was very traumatic, despite everything else she was going through but dealt with it the best way she could. She bought a couple of cheap wigs which often she couldn’t and didn’t wear as they were uncomfortable and didn’t look too good. The cancer has continued to grow and spread, she is now stage 4 and has been told there is nothing more they can do. In January 2024 she started chemo again in the hope it will slow down the cancer growth. Her hair had grown during the previous 12 months, but has now fallen out again. She has been through so much and continues to be as positive as she can, but the one thing she would really like that would help her feel more normal and feminine is a natural looking wig. A real hair wig that is natural and can be washed and styled costs around £1000. A small price to make someone feel more normal, but a lot if you haven’t got it.
So I am trying to raise enough for Katie to have a real hair wig, If I raise any more I would like Katie, her Husband and her Son to have either a few days out to create memories or a weekend away break.
In order to raise money I am going to shave my head so I can suffer for your generosity, and those who know me know how proud I am of my hair and how scared I am of being bald.
We will do this live. venue and date to be confirmed and if you want to join in you could come and shave a bit yourselves, hopefully Katie will be there to start the process.
