Hello, My name is Rachel Ross and I am starting this fundraiser to help people help Katie buy things to keep her engaged and interested while spending then next 4 months or more sitting around to allow healing.
If you don’t know our story Katie (12) broke her hip (femur neck) because of a large bone cyst previously unknown to us. In June 2025 she had a minor fall just playing with other kids and it cracked through the cyst in her femur. She was medi-vaced to BC Children’s Hospital for emergency surgery. She had 3 long screws and a plate install to stabilize the fracture and bone chips packed in the void.
Trying to keep a 12 year old still during summer was a challenge. As a result healing was very slow. She spent 4 months on no weight bearing orders for her leg.
On a follow up X-ray Sept 19 it was found she had broken one of the long screws. She was again medi-vaced to BC Children’s Hospital and again emergency surgery. This time they used bigger and stronger hardware. This time around we are planning to keep her very inactive so the bone can have a chance to heal. This means one board child!
My best ideas to keep her busy will be engage her mind in things that highly interest her. As she has the mind of an engineer this will mean some pretty cool things.
Here is a ‘budget’ of things we are thinking to get her:
Crunch Labs Build Box Subscription- $460 USD plus duties
Crunch Labs Hack Packs Subscription - $493 USD plus duties
Wood Burning Kit - up to $150
Books - $200 +
Video games - $100
Harmonica - $75
Video Editing Software - up to $100
Crafts -$$
Coding/programing teaching soft wear -$?
Babysitters course - $70
Other educational programs or courses she is interested in
We may need to upgrade the family computer so she can do a lot of the tech she is interested in.
