Katie's Courageous Journey

On February 15, 2022, at 42 years old, my brave, spirited and beautiful sister, Katie Handy, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer that attacks the bones.

Through the holidays—while our family celebrated a new baby—Katie quietly suffered unbearable pain in her back. After Christmas, doctors found fractures in her vertebrate and sent her home to heal. As her health declined over the next month and immobility continued, her steadfast husband convinced her to return to the hospital for more tests. Within hours, emergency room doctors delivered a cancer diagnosis.

Katie has always demonstrated a wonderful gift of turning her misfortunes into laughter. She has named her cancer Melvin. Her determination leaves Melvin no chance. To date, Katie has completed radiation therapy and continues an ongoing chemotherapy regimen. She is strengthening her body and mind as she prepares to undergo a Bone Marrow Transplant soon.

As if being diagnosed with cancer wasn't hardship enough, Katie’s immobility leaves her unable to work and drive. Her husband, Chris Handy, is a godsend. He assists her with personal care, drives and attends all appointments and is learning many new domestic responsibilities. His focus is on championing her through her cancer battle.

This fundraiser/support page has been set up with all of the love in the world to ease the financial burden and everyday stressors on Katie and Chris while they focus on her health. Few people are comfortable asking for help. Katie and Chris are no different. Her family and friends assure her we are all in this fight together. We will support her by any means necessary. NOTE: For now, Katie is unable to receive visitors. Her immunity is weak. She must be healthy for the Bone Marrow Transplant.
