In June 2025, Katie's life was profoundly changed with a stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis at only 34-years-old. Katie is an incredible friend, colleague, and member of the community. She's an adjunct professor at Boise State and also works at a local greenhouse and plant nursery to support herself and her beloved pets, Whisper and Andariel. Katie is going to continue teaching this fall during treatment but has had to reduce her course load and shift to entirely online classes to accommodate her chemotherapy schedule and the side effects. Unfortunately, this also means that she will be losing her ability to work her second job.

Although she is bravely facing her cancer treatment, it has already started to impact her financially. We are asking our families, friends, and community to support Katie so she can continue to teach and remain in her home which is close to where she is receiving medical care. Treatment is expected to last several months including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Without access to medical insurance, Katie covering the entire cost of her treatment on top of transportation, rent, and the other expenses that come with everyday life.
