Katie Learns the Elements

As many of you know, I spent a transformative weekend in California in May studying 5 Element acupuncture, which is a lineage of acupuncture that is rooted in the theory that the cause of all dis-ease and imbalance is due to both conscious and subconscious emotional blocks. These were the first kinds of treatments I received ten years ago when acupuncture helped me heal from severe digestive and emotional issues, and they changed my life. I have always used my own healing and self-exploration as a blueprint to heal others, and I have wanted to incorporate 5 Element acupuncture into my practice for years.

I have long questioned if there was a missing link in the ways I help people, if there was a tool I could acquire that could help my patients eliminate blockages to their ultimate healing by addressing emotional trauma that is held in the body. I wondered if there was a way to help patients work through this trauma despite whether or not they were ready to talk about it or explore its existence. Within twenty minutes of the first class during that weekend in Santa Monica, I found myself sobbing at my desk. I felt in an instant, deep within my soul, that I had discovered the answer. It has been years since I felt the call to study something so strongly, and there is not a single person who walks through the door of my clinic that these treatments would not help tremendously. As I mentioned above, they are life altering in the most positive and profound ways.

You guys, I have to study this stuff. I desperately want to be able to heal my patients in this way. Anything else feels like abandoning the clearest path I have seen in a long time.

I have been accepted into a program in Los Angeles that will allow me to study this style of acupuncture in depth for a year with a fantastic mentor, while only needing to be absent from the clinic for one weekend per month. The catch is that the program, and the cost of travel (and ya’ll know I can budget travel like the best of ‘em), is going to cost around $16,000.

Elizabeth Gilbert says “You will know the call of your destiny, because it will sound insane.” Coming up with this amount of cash by September SOUNDS COMPLETELY BONKERS. So this is why I’m writing this. I can’t think of any other way to acquire that amount of money, nor can I think of anyone I would rather receive it from than the people I will be able to repay by helping them heal their lives. It is so hard for me to ask for help from others, and writing this is an act of vulnerability that I feel grateful to be practicing—I’m grateful to have such a loving community where I know that in doing this, regardless of the dollar amount raised, I will be seen and heard and supported. I’m beyond humbled to feel that in my heart.

Thank you for being here for me. I’m so excited to share this ride with you.

Big love,
