Message from Mary Everson:
This is my thistor. It’s a word created that better captures a relationship that’s more than sisters-in-law, more than friends and equally as important and meaningful to me as a blood related traditional definition of sister. In addition to thistor, Katie is a daughter, sister, niece, cousin, girlfriend and friend. Fierce. Stubborn. Persistent. Independent. Driven. Loyal. Strong. Funny. And so many more.
In November, after a trip to visit family, she thought she was feeling under the weather due to the all the cheese and beer she had consumed while vacationing. We all know how that goes! What really happened was the birth of a tumor named Squash. Squash is called Squash because he’s approximately the size of a spaghetti squash. I like to think he’s called Squash so he can get COOKED!
After doctor visits, imaging tests and general passing of the case to various doctors, Katie arrived at UCSF where she met Dr. Corvera. Dr. Corvera is the stopping point. He’s the one who said, “We’re going to take care of you.” He also gave us a new term to learn. The official name is Adrenocortical Carcinoma (ACC). A long name for a rare malignant tumor of the adrenal gland. What do we know? We know it’s going to require an intense surgery to remove not only the tumor but the internal parts the tumor is impacting. In other words, Squash has received his eviction notice. Of course Katie is facing this challenge head on with the spirit and strength of a warrior. That’s truly what she is in body, mind and soul, a warrior.
We know the surgery will take place and the recovery will be long. Treatment beyond the surgery hasn’t been discussed yet as we’re really focused on getting through this stage first.
Although the diagnosis and treatment are daunting, Katie doesn’t back down. Truly, Squash has no idea who he is dealing with. Any donations received will help with the medical expenses and to supplement the loss of income Katie will be facing during the recovery period.
