My cousin Katie Wang was diagnosed with a germinoma brain tumor.
This sweet little 12 year old was in excruciating pain. But despite the pain and being scared and anxious, she faced surgery with amazing bravery and strength! A successful surgery relieved the fluid buildup and associated pain. The biopsy provided a clear diagnosis and plan of treatment. Unfortunately, the tumor has also caused multiple health related issues (smaller kidney, under development, stunted hormone growth, low sodium levels, etc) so they have a long road ahead which includes probably six months of radiation and chemotherapy. In addition, Katie has a tendency to get sick despite flu shots, so a compromised immune system will be dangerous. She will likely also not be able to go back to school which will be extremely difficult for such a social and active girl. She loves cheerleading and gymnastics but won't able to do either. Despite the hardship she knows is in stored for her, she still finds a way to smile and act quite mature. The doctors and nurses are so impressed with her. And she rarely complains, to help keep her mom from worrying too much.
My aunt Kim, as a single mom, will have to balance doctor appointments, home care, schooling, and a soon to be teenager... all while still trying to work. It will be a difficult road for them both, and my hope is that this GoFundMe campaign helps relieve some of the financial stress, so they can focus on the most important thing: healing for Katie!
