On the morning of Wednesday January 13th, Katie was headed on the short eight mile drive from her home in Wortham to her job as a 2nd grade teacher in Mexia.  All indications are that Katie was blinded by the morning sun and she lost control of her car.  The car landed upside down and was completely submerged in a creek full of freezing water.  Katie was trapped in the car under water for around twenty minutes before first responders were able to remove from the car.  She was immediately taken to the hospital in Mexia where an amazing team of doctors and nurses directed their full attention and skills on Katie.  She coded three times at the hospital - basically she died, but the team kept bringing her back.  Once she was stable enough, she was transported by helicopter to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple.  Upon arrival, the emergency room doctors began working on Katie but their hopes of her survival were slim to none.  Her parents, Dion and Dena, have been at the hospital since she arrived.  Dena has been able to be with Katie in ICU each day and Dion has only been able to see her once.  Family, friends and people who don't even know Katie have been praying for Katie since last Wednesday.  What has transpired since last Wednesday can only be attributed to a true miracle from a higher power greater than ourselves.  Katie is alive!  Doctors removed two liters of creek water from her lungs.  Her only broken bones are seven ribs in her back.  Although she is unable to talk because she is on a breathing machine, she is able to communicate by nodding her head.  She is able to raise her fingers and wiggle her toes when asked to do so.  She has sat up in bed and in true Katie fashion, she's ready to get the heck out of that hospital!  Every day, Katie takes small steps forward.  Doctors have told Dion and Dena that medically speaking, she should not be alive.  She is alive because of faith in God and God knowing that Katie has a lot left to do for Him on earth.  Her two-year old daughter Blayne is too young to understand what is going on but old enough to miss her mommy very much.  Katie still faces a long road of recovery and many challenges, but with God by her side, she will overcome these challenges.  As you can imagine, medical bills are mounting up each day.  If you are so inclined, please consider donating what you can to help with these medical costs.  But in any event, PLEASE DO NOT STOP PRAYING.  God is hearing our prayers and thus far his power is trumping the medical world!  Thank you and God bless!
