Hello, my name is Maria and I am Katia Espinosa's daughter. At the end of last year, my mom started experiencing pains in her lower abdomen. After two months, we noticed her stomach had slowly started to expand with pain growing more and more each day. The doctors sent her to get many exams done, but because we have no insurance we had to wait until we had the money for each individual test, waiting weeks in between. So this process took a long time until we had concrete answers of what my mom had. Her doctors diagnosed her with ascites, the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, causing abdominal swelling, which many know is a sign of cancer.
After more tests, doctors diagnosed her with stage 3 ovarian cancer. On Monday February 8, 2016 she got her first chemotherapy, but it was also the day we found out the cancer center would only cover 50% of our medical bills, which still leaves us with quite a debt. My family is usually the first to help anyone with anything at anytime, so it's a bit of a twist to be at the opposite end. Our goal is to reach 20K, but with any donation we receive will be a step forward in helping my brave mother to beat cancer.
