Katia and Peers' trip to Namibia

Dear future supporters,
My name is Katia Reguero and I am a sophomore/soon-to-be Junior at St. Mary's University. I am majoring in International Relations and double minoring in Music and English.
The most wonderful opportunity has arisen through Dr. Aubone at St. Mary's to see the internal workings of two countries in Africa: Namibia and South Africa.
The overarching purpose of this field study is to grant students the opportunity to observe firsthand the post-conflict, peace building process, including activities associated with nation-building, social justice, and human security.
"Namibia and South Africa provide a rich context in which to explore the theme of nation-building, as these two countries demonstrate that the transition to independence is both a beautiful and painful process. Students learn about historical and present-day challenges in creating national identity, an inclusive multi-party democracy, and a model for development. Studying Namibia and South Africa’s model and approach to such issues provides a useful context for understanding globalization and nation-building struggles throughout the world" (Center for Global Education and Experience).
These funds will help alleviate the total estimated cost of $4,075 for each student to participate, in addition to the expenses of enrolling in summer courses associated with the field study. To reduce the cost of airfare and program fees for students, Dr. Aubone has offered to donate her earnings from teaching two summer courses to contribute toward these expenses, conditional upon evidence of successful fundraising attempts on the part of student participants.
The dates are set for May 27th-June 11th 2016.
This trip would be a dream come true for me. It has always been my desire to visit African countries in need so that I can, in any way, be of service. Additionally, it is my belief that such an experience will impact me to a degree where my future career goals (and overall personal growth) will be affected for the better. As an International Relations major, there is no better educational experience than seeing and experiencing first-hand the matters being studied. Finally, the opportunity for a hands-on experience in Africa that I have so longed for has presented itself. All I need is a little extra help. I would be immensely grateful for any and all donations possible.
